Recording

Steinway Recording is a purpose-built recording facility featuring a pristine Steinway model B grand piano. Top quality microphones, preamps and software are used to deliver fantastic solo and ensemble recording at an extremely competitive price.

Located in Fulbeck on the Lincolnshire / Notts border in England we engineer, produce and master recordings for visiting musicians and can extend this to remote sessions conducted entirely over the internet. With excellent ATC monitoring and industry-standard audio processing we also mix and master outside projects ready for production and release.

For recording piano there is nothing more inspiring than the real thing and when it is a Steinway piano there is nothing better. With its uncompromising sound and perfect touch, the Steinway piano has become the standard by which others are judged.

The instrument is a perfect Steinway model B (6’11” / 211 cm) number 579089 purchased new from Steinway in 2007. This piano was selected from several model Bs in Steinway Hall, London for its balance of tone across the whole range. The action was immediately re-pinned, set up and regulated by the renowned Steinway technician Jeff Prett - a standard procedure for these world class pianos to ensure an absolute evenness of touch and tone for the pianist. Regular tuning, regulation and maintenance is carried out by Steinway-trained technician Peter Roscoe. The piano has recently been voiced by the world-renowned technician Peter Salisbury.

The studio uses heat recovery fresh air ventilation to maintain an extremely stable temperature and humidity. Fresh air is diffused within the studio and isolation areas through a bespoke air diffusion sock. This achieves draught-free and silent ventilation - a very comfortable environment in which to perform and create.

There is plenty of room available for accommodation in our neighbouring farmhouse if required. Excellent local amenities include the lovely Crafty Cafe and The Hare & Hounds pub, within a few hundred metres of the studio.

Recording takes place using classic Neumann, Royer and AKG microphones alongside Neve and Universal Audio preamps. This combination is one of the best, capturing every nuance of sound. We also have a good selection of entirely hand-made refined reproductions of classic valve microphones by Beesneez.

Monitoring is through ATC SCM45A Pro 3-way studio monitors as well as the standard NS10m speakers. Conversion to digital takes place using the latest Universal Audio Apollo digital interfaces to Logic DAW at 96/24. Post processing and mastering is done using Universal Audio Digital and other dedicated software plug-ins.

We use the incredible Isotope RX software for restoration and detailed crafting of audio. This often proves to be the secret ingredient for a perfect end result.
